Getting started with Claude: a quick tour of Projects, Skills and Connectors

If you haven't started using Claude yet, you're leaving a lotof money and time on the floor. That isn't dramatics. It's the direct result of skipping one of the most capable platforms available to anyone today.

Hold on, what is Claude?

Claude is the AI assistant from Anthropic, a company founded by a group of senior researchers who left OpenAI with one mission: to build a model you can genuinely rely on. It's especially strong at long-context understanding and at complex writing and analysis tasks. Most of our users switch to it and don't go back.

How do you start? Download the app

The entry point is claude.ai/download. There are Windows and Mac builds, and you can also work from any browser at claude.ai. We recommend the desktop version for one specific reason: access to your files. Claude can read folders, process documents, and create files on your machine. That completely changes the way you work with it.

Three systems inside Claude

There are three separate systems in the interface worth knowing about:

Chat: the classic conversation. This is where most of the magic happens, and where the rest of this article focuses
Cowork: the area where Claude performs actions on your computer: organizing files, creating documents and moving them between folders
Code: a dedicated space for building landing pages, whole sites and complex automations (this is Claude Code)

Projects: a separate space per client, per project

A Project is essentially a smart folder. You open a space for each client or project, upload all the relevant files to it, set the tone you want, and Claude learns to speak in that project's exact language. For example: a UI designer can open a project called "UI for site X", upload the brand documents, the company colors, and previous brief files. From then on, every conversation inside that project draws on that knowledge automatically.

Skills: recipes that save hours a week

A Skill is a recipe. You write detailed instructions once for how you want something to look, and Claude executes it time after time without you repeating yourself. Know the feeling of sending the same email template over and over, or drafting the same kind of post in the same tone? A Skill solves exactly that.

Connectors: the gateway to external systems

Asked for "build me a deck in Canva"? The Canva connector links up, Claude goes in, creates the file, and hands it back to you in the chat. Asked for a Google Doc? The Doc is created.
