Claude for Chrome: the agent that does everything in your browser

Picture your next morning: you open the browser, and there are 40 emails to get through, a few dates to copy into the calendar, and two sites to sign up for. Except you're not doing any of it. Someone else is. An AI agent sitting in your browser, clicking for you.

Hold on, what is Claude for the browser?

Anthropic, the company behind Claude, released an extension called Claude for Chrome. Instead of opening a claude.ai tab and copying text back and forth, Claude sits in the side of your browser, sees the page you see, and can click, type and scroll by itself. Exactly like a personal assistant, except it works 24/7 and never needs a coffee break.

How is this different from regular ChatGPT?

The difference between a normal chat and Claude for Chrome is the difference between an adviser and an employee. A normal chat tells you "here's the text, go copy it". An agent in the browser opens the tab for you, types the text, and hits Send. You just ask; it does.

How do you install it? Step by step

1. Open the Chrome Web Store at chromewebstore.google.com and search for "Claude for Chrome".
2. Click Add to Chrome and approve the permissions (tab access, so the extension can see and act inside them).
3. Sign in with your Claude account. The extension requires a Claude Pro subscription, around $20 a month.
4. Done.A Claude panel appears at the side of the browser. From there you ask it to do things on whatever site you're on.

At the time of writing the extension is in Anthropic's Research Preview, meaning it's stable enough for daily use but still evolving. It's worth following Anthropic's updates for the extension.

Example 1: clearing an inbox in 30 seconds

I opened Gmail and told Claude "delete all the emails from AliExpress". Within seconds the extension started searching, selecting and deleting, without me touching the keyboard. You watch the cursor move on its own, the search field fill in, and the emails disappear. No complicated add-ons, no scripts, no regexes. Just one request in plain language.

Example 2: an illustrated story with a consistent character

The second example is even more interesting: I asked Claude to open an image-generation tool and produce a series of pictures of a boy from the moment he wakes up until he arrives at school, keeping the character identical across all of them. Claude wrote the prompts itself, submitted the requests, waited for each image to render, and navigated between scenes. The result? A complete illustrated story that built itself.

Where else can you use this?

• Filling in long forms: Claude reads, understands and fills them in for you
• Competitor research: three sites in three tabs, a summary in a new one
• Calendar management: booking meetings, moving times, setting reminders
• Translation work: opens a site in a foreign language, translates, and replies for you
• Pulling data out of tables: copies from a table on a site into Google Sheets in another tab
• Onboarding to new tools: navigates a complex dashboard on your behalf

What to keep in mind: important warnings

The agent is powerful, but there are things to understand before you turn it loose on your banking site:

• Prompt injection is real: a malicious site can try to talkto Claude through hidden text on the page. Anthropic warns about this themselves, so don't let the agent operate on sites you don't trust.
• Irreversible actions, carefully:deleting emails is one thing, but money transfers, sending contracts and cancelling subscriptions are ones you'll want to review before approving.
• It doesn't know what you actually want: give it narrow, clear tasks. "Delete all the emails from AliExpress", excellent. "Tidy up my inbox", open to interpretation.
• Start small:first week, reading only (find something, summarize a page, copy content). Second week, reversible actions (label emails, organize tabs). Once you've built trust, expand.

What does it cost?

The extension itself is free. What costs money is the Claude Pro subscription, around $20 a month, without which the extension won't run. It's the same subscription you use on claude.ai itself, so if you're already paying for Pro, the extension is a free bonus.
